The EBRU Exhibition “Mūžīgā mīlestība” to be held in Riga from 5 till 24 May’2019 

This year the Festival of Oriental Art and Music “RUMI FEST” is going to be opened by the Tradition Turkish art exhibition of Ebru.

There will be displayed art works by the special guest from Turkey – Ozden Aidin, students of the studio EBRU RĪGA, pupils of the gymnasium “Maxima”, wards of Riga social care and rehabilitation centre (SARC) branch “Kalnciems”, who are studying and practicing the art of Ebru.

The opening of the exhibition is to be held in Riga Town Hall (I floor) on May 7, at 13.00

In the framework of the opening events Ozden Aidin will demonstrate her artistry during an improvised workshop accompanied by the sounds of the reed flute (ney). Furthermore, every visitor will be able to join the paining of an Ebru image – choose the colour of one’s mood, and add some ornaments or strokes to the joint artwork.

Amazing and genuine technique of paper marbling on water – ebru, has been transferred throughout generations from masters to students, and stretches back to antiquity. The most antique piece of Ebru found by the moment is dated the 11th century, and even then its technique was perfect and flawless. Paints are put onto water surface, after they are given fanciful shapes with help of special tools. Paints open on the water, but it does not sink due to its specific composition. The finished painting is covered with a piece of paper, which soaks paints and every of such imprintings is unique and exclusive by its ornament and range of colours.

Over the following centuries the art of Ebru became one of the techniques, used in decoration of manuscripts, calligraphy, fabrics, carpets and ceramics on the entire territory of Asia. The newly emerged kind of paining had different styles, trends and schools even then. Nowadays ancient traditions of Ebru are developing on top of trends, attracting more and more fans and followers around the globe.

An image that was made on water can be transferred onto fabric, paper, wood, glass and ceramics. The art of Ebru is not just an art, it embraces transparency and purity of water, riot of colours and inspiration, unrivaled artistic masterhood, flawlessness and beauty of the surrounding world, joint together and sealed by Divine uniqueness.

This amazing exhibition and master classes led by Ozden Aidin will give a solid background for mutual understanding and consolidation of cultural relations, will demonstrate the hidden before aspects of the richest Turkish culture and show visitors the centuries-old artistic heritage, help in learning the technique and improve their skills in the ancient art. Keeping in mind that Turkey is an important strategic partner in various sectors of economics and industry – the exhibition will open a new page in cultural exchange between the countries, advance mutual knowledge and exchange of traditions between them.

Özden Aydın

Özden was born in 1985. She studied at Seljuk University Mathematics Teaching Department and graduated in 2007.

In 2004, she started taking marbling lessons from Sadreddin Özçimi. She became third in the category of flower in Traditional Turkish Marbling Art contest in 2010. In the same year she received a ratification from Sadreddin Özçimi and became an assistant of Sadreddin Özçimi in Konya Destegül Fine Arts School.

In 2011 Özden won the first prize in the 16th State Turkish Decorative Arts Competition with the title “Seljuk” from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

In 2012 the artist was added to the list of “UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In Siirt she worked in the project titled “Art from the Street” aimed at protecting young people from bad habits and she was invited by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on “November 24th Reception” to the Presidential Palace of Turkey with the theme “Teachers Who Make a Difference”.

In the academic year 2017-2018, she worked in various art projects at Beylerbeyi Sabancı Art Institute.  “Molecule” installation and “99 Names of Allah” were exhibited in Yeditepe Biennale which was supported by government in 2018.

Özden is the artist who has participated in many exhibitions throughout the country, she is still giving marbling lessons at her art studio in İstanbul.
